The Peace Museum is located in the centre of Gernika, in Foru Plaza, opposite the Town Hall. The building was converted into a museum in 1998 and in the first few years it was mainly about the history of Gernika-Lumo and the bombing of the city on 26 April 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.
The Peace Museum has existed in its present form since 2003. It has several floors that house the reception, the permanent exhibition, the temporary exhibition, the documentation centre on the bombing of Gernika and the educational area. The permanent exhibition is divided into several themes: 1) What is peace? 2) What happened in Gernika on 26 April 1937? 3) Contemporary testimonies. 4) What about human rights in the world today? The mission of the Gernika Peace Museum is to preserve, exhibit, disseminate, research and communicate the basic idea of the culture of peace.
