The House of Culture is centrally located in Foru Plaza in Gernika-Lumo and was founded in 1987 by the Gernika-Lumo City Council. The administrative headquarters is autonomous and dedicated to the promotion of culture, especially Basque culture. The House of Culture supports and promotes local groups and citizen participation in all areas of culture. The music school (Olaeta Musika Eskola), the youth information office, the organisation of regional celebrations, school and extracurricular education, the cinema (Lizeo Antzokia) and the events hall (Elai Alai Aretoa) also fall under its jurisdiction. It houses an exhibition hall that offers varied exhibitions to the public throughout the year.
Various courses are offered for arts and crafts, wood carving, jewellery making and painting. There is also the Maria Agirre room, which may be used by associations, groups and local parties for various meetings or workshops.
