The church is located in the centre of downtown Sopron, where Hungary's first Evangelical Lutheran congregation was founded in 1565. It is the third largest Lutheran church in the country and was built in 1782/83 in late Baroque-Classical style. 80 years later, a 52-metre-high tower with an octagonal lantern in a round-arch style was added.
The church interior is divided into three naves by eight Tuscan columns. There are two galleries in the side aisles. A total of 2,500 people can be accommodated in the church. The pulpit is the work of an Ödenburg master. The baroque, gilded wood-carved altar with its rich figural work comes from the Kahlenberg monastery near Vienna. The altarpiece shows Christ on the Mount of Olives. An organ was installed in the church in 1884.
