The Church of Santa María is located in the centre of Gernika, near the Assembly House. Built in the 15th century, the religious building combines different architectural styles such as Gothic and Renaissance. Built of stone and masonry, the church comprises three naves with semi-domes and a Gothic cross vault by the Cantabrian stonemason Antonio Ortiz. It rises on eight elegant classical columns. Inside, there is an exquisite Renaissance choir. It also has a Walcker organ from 1889 and a beautiful carillon in the three-part Baroque bell tower from 1775. The structure of posts and archivolts with carved images of saints surrounding the entrance is interesting. According to the quotation above the portal, "Myll et cccc et IXL años Sanch I o de enparan", the master builder Sancho de Emparan was responsible for the construction in 1449.
